Maths Class 4 - Division (Remedial)
Hi All,
Today we'll understand the concept of division. 😊😊
The basic question which comes into everyone's mind is what division is?
Division in basic term is equal sharing, repeated subtraction and reverse of multiplication.
We shall be using following terms in the process of understanding the concept of division:
a) Dividend
b) Divisor
c) Quotient
d) Remainder
After noting these terms, another basic question comes to our mind that what does these terms mean?
Before we proceed further, we shall understand the meanings of terms to be used in the process of division.
a) Dividend: The number which is to be divided is called dividend.
For example, let us take dividend to be '35'.
b) Divisor: The number by which we divide the dividend.
For example, let us take divisor to be '7'.
c) Quotient: The answer which we get after dividing the dividend by divisor is quotient.
For example, to find the quotient, let us divide 35 by 7. To divide them, we shall write it as 35 ÷ 7 in the following manner:
Hence, 35 ÷ 7 = 5
5 is the quotient
d) Remainder: The remaining number is the remainder.
Let us understand the aforementioned terms from the image below.
For dividing any dividend with a divisor following basic steps are to be followed :
Step 1 : Divide
Step 2: Multiply
Step 3: Subtract
Step 4: Drop Down the next digit.
Let us try and understand 58 ÷ 2 by applying the above-mentioned steps:
1. Divide.
|
2. Multiply & subtract.
|
3. Drop down the next
digit.
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Two goes into 5 two times, or 5 tens ÷ 2 = 2 whole tens -- but there is a remainder!
|
To find it, multiply 2 × 2 = 4, write that 4 under the five, and subtract to find the remainder of 1 ten.
|
drop down the 8 of the ones next to the leftover 1 ten. You combine the remainder ten with 8 ones, and get 18.
|
Divide 2 into 18. Place 9 into the quotient.
|
Multiply 9 × 2 = 18, write that 18 under the 18, and subtract.
|
The division is over since there are no more digits in the dividend. The quotient is 29.
|
Before we start solving some problems, let us first understand the Properties of Division:
1. 0 ÷ any number = 0.
Example: 0 ÷ 1 = 1.
0 ÷ 2 = 2.
2. Any number ÷ 0 = not possible.
Example: 7 ÷ 0 means, how many times will we subtract 0 from 7 till we reach 0? Which is not possible.
3. Any number ÷ 1 = The same number.
Example: 15 ÷ 1 = 15.
21 ÷ 1 = 21.
4. Any number ÷ the same number = 1.
Example: 16 ÷ 16 = 1.
20 ÷ 20 = 1.
Some interesting facts about Division:
When we get remainder '0', it can be said that the dividend is exactly divisible by the divisor.
Example: 35 is exactly divisible by 7.
Remainder is always less than the divisor.
Dividend = Divisor X Quotient + Remainder.
Every division fact has a corresponding multiplication fact to verify it.
Example: Division fact : 48 ÷ 6 = 8.
Multiplication fact : 6 X 8 = 48.
Let us now watch the videos for better understanding
